About

Joey Miller is a manipulator of wiggly air working toward his MM in music composition at the University of Georgia. Often focusing on augmenting the performer with electronics, Joey has found great satisfaction in making both beeps and bloops. His compositions often focus on the human condition, from the importance of connection, to the fragility of memory.

In 2024, his piece Past/Present was selected for a reading and recording with Hub New Music as part of the Klingler Electroacoustic Residency. His orchestral piece Alone at 7:03 and the Stillness of the Lake was selected for a reading with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in 2022. Also in 2022, his orchestral piece Hatcher Pass was a finalist for the American Composers Orchestra EarShot recording session. His most recent commission was for his Sonata for Tuba and Piano which was performed at the 2024 Midwest Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference.

Joey also enjoys early music, and was a member of the BGSU Early Music Ensemble where he played cello and tenor viol. Notable performances include the Toledo Museum of Art’s opening of their Carrivagio exhibit, and tenor viol in J.S. Bach’s Actus Tragicus with the BGSU Collegiate Chorale. He also was a member of the BGSU cello ensemble who performed many of his arrangements from David Popper’s Requiem to ABBA.

Outside of music, Joey enjoys hiking, camping, baking, table-top roleplaying games, board games, MarioKart Wii, and traveling. His favorite color is blue, and his favorite musical is Hadestown.
